GUITARS & TONES

Here is a small sampling of my guitar work, in keeping with the subject of tone.  My experience, and joy, as a guitarist was always deeply rooted in how the sound makes me feel, arguably choosing tone and feel over technique. The way my hands, my guitar and amp, the crowd, and the environment all came together for a brief moment in time always shaped my experience. For the love of tone, this was my main focus, and my outlet as an artist was figuring what I could bring to the sonic table. Melody or space. Intense or ambient.

For many years I did a lot of demos: pedals and amps mostly - this was a joy for me as it's a journey of tone, swapping things around, seeing how they play together in harmony - or not. I share these not as a guitarist, but as an artist in search for sonic perfection.

Overview: Introduced in the Spring of 1959, the Gibson  ES-345 was an upmarket upgrade to the popular ES-335, combining Gibson's reputation for cutting-edge innovation with classic traditional design. The thin body was easier for players to hold than conventional archtops, the inner block enhanced sustain and reduced feedback, and the revolutionary Patent Applied For humbucking pickups set a standard of performance unmatched to this day. With its elegant gold hardware throughout, the 345 became an instant classic, and remained one of the worlds' most innovative electric guitars. From Headstrong Amps: "The Lil King-S was Wayne's idea to create an amp that was never made during this era, a single channel 25-30 watt amp but not as bulky or heavy as say a Deluxe or Vibrolux Reverb. The other, to take a stock Lil King and see how far he could push it without changing the "inefficient" Phase Inverter found in the original circuit. Tonally think louder and tighter Princeton Reverb. Still not as bright as a typical Blackface style amp in this wattage range, the theory was to create a higher powered version with more headroom and bottom end definition, but when over-driven would retain some of the classic small amp character. The amp also accepts 6V6 (approx. 20 watts) or EL34 power tubes with a simple re-bias. If you love the Princeton Reverb sound but wish it was a little louder with better bottom end definition, this may be the amp for you! What does the "S" stand for...Stage, Souped up, or Lil' King on Steroids..."
